12 Questions You Should Ask the Manufacturer of an LED luminaire
- Who is your LED Supplier? We diligently research and test the best LEDs the market has to offer against our customer's demands. Cree has been our LED supplier and strategic partner since 2005. We have been designing with Philips LEDs since 2002.
- Do they provide an IEM LM-80 test report for the LEDs? Both Cree and Philips have detailed LM-80 data available. Cree is on the forefront of the definition of this test and works very closely with the DOE.

- Is the luminaire thermally managed ? We sense the temperature at the LED package, often referred to as the solder point temp, or ts. As the solder point temp approaches 65°C, the luminaire begins to cut back on the current to the LEDs in an effort to reduce the temperature back down to 65 °C. Typically, LED manufacturers carefully regulate the solder point temperature (ts) to the junction temperature (tj) through their manufacturing process. If, as in the case of LM-80 testing, the ambient temperature is forced above the 65°C point, the luminaire will continue to lower the current to the LEDs in an attempt to regulate the temperature, avoiding a destructive situation. Clearlight In-Situ testing was performed by California LIghting Technology Center (CLTC). Upon request we are happy to share In-Situ test data with our customers.
- What's the expected L70 lifetime? 70,000 hours. There are many components to this: the LEDs are rated for 70,000 hours +, our driver board is rated to > 200,000 hours, and our active cooler is rated > 100,000 hours. Our fixture and optics are made of high quality cast aluminum and acrylic.
- Can the manufacturer provide a IES LM-79 test report? Yes. We have derived this data from testing done at independent laboratories that are NVLAP accredited. IES files for each product are available for download on the respective product page. EcoSpot. Beacon.
- What are the delivered lumens and LPW of the fixture? The EcoSpot has LPW rating of >55. The Beacon has a LPW of >63. We believe that what matters is “foot-candles on the ground." The Beacon delivers .01fc (full moonlight) at over 4 mounting heights per side.
- What is the Power Factor of your fixture? Our Power Factor is >0.9 and the Total Harmonic Content (THC) is .019. Harmonic currents can create additional voltage and power losses in the transmission lines, heat transformers and capacitors, so a low THC number in an electric device is something to look for. These figures are the result of independent testing.
- Are you a DOE Quality Advocate and do your products bear a Lighting Facts label? Yes. Evluma is registered as a Quality Advocate and has taken the pledge for SSL products. Evluma products voluntarily bear the Lighting Facts label.
- Is the product ENERGY STAR labeled? We are monitoring this program with the EPA and are active in the creation of a category for our class of product. We expect this to evolve over time and will make the appropriate application at that time.
- Is the fixture RoHS compliant? Mercury Free? Our product is designed with the intent of being RoHS compliant. We are using lead free PCBs, solder that is lead free and specifying only components that are RoHS. We are in the process of verifying that 100% of the design meets the RoHS specs. Our product is Mercury Free.
- How do you ensure your products are safe and reliable? The Clearlight EcoSpot and the Beacon both bear the MET Mark and comply to UL standard 1598, CS C22.2 No. 250, Standard for Safety of Luminaires. The MET Mark indicates to consumers, OSHA inspectors, local electrical inspectors, and purchasing agents that the product complies with the applicable UL or CSA standard. Detailed assembly instructions, testing and meticulous incoming component inspection ensure that the Clearlight is built to strict production standards.
- Does your warranty meet or exceed the payback period? The product warranty is 5 years from installation. While payback periods can depend on the Kwh rate in your area, the payback period typically averages 2-3 years. Please contact our sales representative for a payback calculator.
